What to Expect at an Eye-Exam appointment

Licensed optometrists are always reminding us of the need and the importance of paying regular visits to their clinics. Eye experts recommend and insist on us people to make it a habit to go to eye clinics from as early as possible. But do we even listen?

Chances are that most of us will not even bother taking our kids and young-ones alike to them. The number one reason we give is that the kids are not complaining about their eyes at all in the first place.

Case for Regular Check-Ups

Here’s what most optometrist with years of experience in the field have to say about such cadre of folks.  Doctors argue that kids and children alike are in no position to ascertain whether or not their eyesight’s are actually working correctly or not and that is exactly why most optometrists are no longer surprised when a 35 year old walks into his New York clinic with an eye condition like Amblyopia. Amblyopia is a condition that begins early in life and which if left untreated will most likely cause either or both the patients’ eyes to lose sight completely.

Besides that, so many people have had the unfortunate turn of events leading to their complete lose of eyesight just because of undetected glaucoma. Lest one forgets, Glaucoma has no symptoms. And, just to set the record straight, Glaucoma is an easily manageable and treatable medical condition more so if it is detected early.

A typical eye exam often commences with the medical personnel, be it the doctor or their aides, taking your medical history.  And, since it is commonplace for most of us to only go to the eye clinics when and only when we have a complaint that touches or that affects our eyes, the second thing in most eye exams has to do with the medical experts looking into means and ways of either reducing your pain or healing your eye-related injuries.

What to Expect in an Eye Exam

In instances when the eye doctors known as optometrists are not really quite certain about what is wrong with your eyes, the exam proceeds on and becomes what is commonly referred to as a visual acuity measurement. In layman’s terms, the exam has the patients attempt to read out letters, numbers or just plain old symbols placed at varying distances from them.

The patient is instructed to read the letters with one of their eyes shut and so forth as the doctors try to make out what could be ailing them.

The Objective Part of an Eye-Exam

eye_exam_childThis part has the experts examining the patient’s retina, their eye muscles and eye parts like the pupils to deduce additional diagnostic information.

Finally, the ophthalmologist will check the overall condition of the health of the patients’ eyes. To do so they proceed to putting eye drops in your eyes in order to dilate them so that they can be able to view all parts of the eye.

Of course, it is all painless.

Armed with that information gathered from the above round of exams, the doctor has more insight and knowledge as to what the best remedy is to subscribe to their eye patients in order to enable them to retain their proper vision for a long time still to come.

A lot of us do not pay attention to our eyes unless a problem arises such as blurred vision, pain in the eye, etc. The ideal situation would be to get your eyes checked at regular intervals such as yearly eye exams in order to make sure the eyes are in good condition and do not require any corrective treatments or eye glasses.
