Dry Eye

What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a common eye disorder.  It start with insuffient tear production which leads to poor tear quality.  This will start the inflammatory cycle which will lead to all of dry eye symptoms and signs. One contributor to this condition is Meibomian gland blockage which results in Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

Meibomian glands are the tiny oil glands which line the margin of the eyelids.  These glands secrete oils which coat the surface of the tear film and keeps the water component of our tears from evaporating.  Lack of secretion from these glands cause the tear film to dry out fast and leads to dry spots on the cornea resulting in  INFLAMMATION.

Treatments

Tempsure Envi

Tempsure Envi uses radio frequency energy to improve the function of the Meibomian Glands (oil and tear glands around the eyes). These glands become blocked overtime and loose their ability to produce enough oils. The Tempsure Envi delivers radio frequency energy to the upper and lower lids. This will unclog  glands  and stimulate the glands to increase lubrication. Fine line wrinkles are a result from insuffient collagen fibre production.  During the above procedure, the skin’s temperature around the eye increases and it triggers a natural response for the skin to produce new collagen. These new collagen fibres are dense and  fill the gaps (reducing fine lines and wrinkles).  This is an added benefit  to your Tempsure Envi treatment!

Icon IPL

The ICON uses intense pulse light, a form of broadspectrume light. The light energy from the IPL warms the Meibomian Glands which aid in their proper expression. This helps increase the volume of tears on the ocular surface. IPL technology also help to cogulate telangiectatic blood vessels and destroy broken facial capillaries. The IPL targets the inflammation along the upper and lower lid margins to reduce swelling as well. The IPL has been popular and beneficial for 20+ years in treating facial rosacea and recently became popular for the treatment of dry eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both treatment options are great options and
although the treatments are similar, they are not the same. After a consultation with

Dr. Singh, he will determine which treatment or if a combination of both would be best suited for you.

Tempisure Envi: The Tempsure Envi has a gentle pain-free warming sensation on and around the eyes. A corneal shield is inserted and some pressure may be felt on the eyelids when treating close to the eyelashes.

ICON IPL: The ICON IPL is a pulse of light and

some discomfort may be felt. It can be described as a pinching sensation.

Both procedures are safe and no down time is
required. Care of the skin around the eyes is
important and therefore a medical grade sunscreen is recommended.

Dry Eye Syndrome is a chronic disease and

results will take time and vary patient to patient.

You will feel some relief from the dry eyes as early as after the 1st session but it will be important to complete all the sessions for the full benefits of the treatment a few weeks apart. After the treatment the results do last 9 to 12 months and yearly touchups will be needed.

3-5 treatments are normally required however

every patient is different. During a consultation, we will determine how many treatments will be optimal for you.
